JP Auclair 1977-2014
Hero. Pioneer. Innovator. Artist. Intellect. Engineer. Founder of Armada. Skier. Father. Friend. These are a few of the myriad hats JP Auclair wore. Many if not all tribute articles on JP start with a laundry list of titles, crafts conquered. All for good reason. This past week the world lost a true genius, a renaissance man. My thoughts and deepest prayers go out to Ingrid and his newborn son Leo.
I had the pleasure of knowing JP in different stages and different ways in my life. As a 12 year old he was my hero. An unprecedented skiing icon whose posters painted my bedroom wall. I watched his film segments in “13” and “The Game” until the tape spools on the VHS melted. What JP was bringing to the sport of skiing was different. What he did in those formative years of our young sport would forever change the landscape of skiing and will continue to do so for generations to come.
Over the years the person who JP was to me continued to evolve. After beginning work at Armada as a teenage intern, the man who was once my hero soon became someone I worked with. He became a friend. Words can’t describe how humble and kind a man JP was. He was truly interested, engaging at all times. He was absolutely hilarious. He was so clever. His humor and outlook on life are things I will take with me for the rest of my life. Our times working together abroad in the more recent years, notably on film shoots in Turkey and New Zealand, will go on to live as some of the most poignant and happy memories in my life.
It is safe to say that JP is one of the biggest influences not just in my life, but in everyone’s life he touched on a daily basis. Though this moment is a crushing loss for all, I try to find solace in the fact that we all had a lot of time to learn from JP and that should not be taken for granted. His legacy and what he has created will live on forever.
JP’s family asked that if anyone would like to help, they can visit The Auclair Fund and make a donation to help out Ingrid and Leo during these difficult times.
I love you JP. Thanks for everything.
